Yesterday I heard on the radio that there was a big rumble at a Houston high school between evacuated NO students and the Houston students. The fight lasted 1/2 hour with several students sent to the hospital. Evidently the Houston students didn't like the transfer students or the NO students didn't take to their new surroundings. Bummer. The Houston HS principal said the school would not tolerate violence. Good for the principal.

Sad....I wonder how many of them (Texans) reflect Barbara Bush's attitude about the survivors? Kids many times just repeat what they hear at home.

The morning fight at Jones High School started after a student from Houston threw a soft drink can into a group of New Orleans students, a school district spokesman said.

One student from New Orleans was treated for facial injuries, and two Houston teens were treated for face and rib injuries. In all, 20 to 25 students got involved.

Terry Abbott, a spokesman for the Houston Independent School District, said that sort of behavior would not be tolerated.

"The quickest way to earn a ticket out of Jones High School and into detention is to hurt one of those students from New Orleans," Abbott told the Houston Chronicle.

I think the Houston kid was an a-hole, but the school's reaction is rediculous. The Houston kid threw a soda can and the NO kids reacted with violence? I know they are having a tough time, but that's not how "guests" should react.

At least they are all being punished, but the slant of the story is why I love CNN.

Michael, not sure which school you went to but in the ones I attended if I were to throw a can of soda at a group of others and hit one, well I had better be ready for the reaction. Meaning Duck, or Run.
Just to bad now because the bad blood has started.

In our school, both victim and perp get booted the same for hitting one another. Makes for easy justice... First offense is a trip home for 1 week. Second is expulsion. There is no third... unless they have parents that have a lot of pull...

I agree is reasonable to expect a fight, but not reasonable for the school spokesperson to choose a side. Besides, I have to admit that if someone threw a soda at me, that would not be enough for me to retaliate.

I went to a small high school. There were a few rich snobs & jocks, but most kids came from middle class or farmworker families. Alot of kids worked hard in orchards or hop yards in the summer, and had to buy their own school clothes and supplies. It's amazing how hard physical work and school athletics results in less strife and machoism. We didn't have many fights and there wasn't any gang sh_t. If there was a fight, both combatants were booted. Of course, back then the teachers could spank kids in elementary and jr. high school.

Hmmm, wonder if a few good hacks works to correct a student's misbehavior? I can tell you from personal experience, getting a few hacks across your butt goes a long way in "adjusting" a students attitude or behavior. We didn't have "time out" or go to the remedial room to be babysat for the day. Justice was swift, painful and done with. You got over it but your butt was sore for a day. :?

We don't know if the soda was in a can or not...we do need to remember that kids that age are struggling with a lot of chemical and emotional issues. Puberty ain't so easy. Our school has a no tolerance policy also. A while back some dipstick shoved Brent at the water fountain, Brent banged his lip on the fountain. He turned around and shoved the kid back..a fair reaction. Well, the dipstick fell backwards, tripped and down a half flight of stairs. Brent was scared spitless. After revue by school principal Brent was forgiven any punishment. School felt he had learned a lesson being scared. Kid who fell learned his lesson also. No problems since then for either kid.

I may have gotten a hack or several as a student, I'm ok with that type of punishment, short of actual beatings.
