Why isn't the France riots on page one? If we had 300 cities with riots, I am sure we'd see something on page one and so would the rest of the world. I suppose they (French) still don't believe that the unrest is due in major part to there free and open border policies???

I found this article and highlighted the area I feel is ironic in its context:

The number of cars torched overnight in France climbed slightly over the previous night to 502 in a 16th night of unrest that took its heaviest toll on the French provinces, police said Saturday.

Security was boosted in the capital with some 3,000 police officers fanning out around strategic points to counter feared weekend attacks targeting Paris. Gatherings were banned from Saturday morning until Sunday morning.

"We returned to an almost normal situation in Ile de France," said national police chief Michel Gaudin, referring to the Paris region. Arson attacks were counted in 163 towns around France, he said. The count of those detained overnight stood at 206, bringing to 2,440 the number of suspects picked up in just over two weeks of unrest.

Two Molotov cocktails were tossed at a mosque Friday evening in the southern town of Carpentras, but it was not immediately clear whether the attack was linked to the unrest that has wracked the poor suburbs and small towns of France since Oct. 27. President Jacques Chirac demanded that investigators quickly find out who was behind the attack.

I guess they feel if Paris is safe then all is well in the country at large?

Really proves all the bad mouthers wrong...the French aren't afraid to fight. They just like to do so inside their own borders.

Doug,

Whatever you may think about the French they for sure are NO racists.

When the Iraq war started we had here and on the other side a lot of anti French postings and I tried to explain why the French didn't joined without approval of the UN. I mentioned the ticking time bomb they had to face by having the largest Islam community in the country. Years back when I was 17 and we tried hitchhiking from the Med back to Paris and Amsterdam. In Marseilles we walked trough such a Ban lieu. We were very glad when we came out of that area. In those days the Algerian liberation OAS was very active with terror actions so we were not feeling very comfortable. But happily we didn't encounter any problems. After that first visit France became my number one favorite of foreign countries and still to day is the favorite vacation destiny for us Dutch.
Always over the years I said to ever one who would listen You can say a lot about the French but one thing is for sure they are no racists. Never been in a country where you see so many mixed people go along in a pleasant way with each other in daily live. Don't forget we also have a lot of people who simply want to assimilate, necessary to obtain good education and getting a job and a lot who will not for ever what reason. That goes for France too and they have much, much more of them..

I'd bet our US statistics aren't anything worth bragging over either when it comes to looking at unemployment based on race or ethnicity.
