OK, got great weather to do some boat work in that should have been done a long long time ago. I added a new memory foam mattress and it is very heavy so I felt compelled to put in the new vertical door before my back gives out.

Cut once and measure twice, but make sure you measure twice BEFORE you cut once...

I cut out the port side also for more room for storage. Now I will not have to lift the bunk to access the stuff!

The board you see laying on the keel is covering fiberglassed 3/4 inch pvc that connects the bow locker to the underfloor. I had experienced water flowing from the front before and that added to my moisture concerns so I connected front to rear with pvc and glassed it in about 3 years ago. No moisture problems. The board itself is sealed in fiberglass too in case of moisture concerns as well!
Next is to install a door. That will happen tomorrow so stay tuned. Had a good idea that I think will work well until the Admiral says no... lol

I have been trying to get Bayliner to install a door on that very same bulkhead for many years on many models.........sure does make sense to have one there 'eh. :D

Now maybe Bayliner will catch on. :)
There's a TON of storage space in there. Looks great Doug.

Well, got to playing today and installed the door...
I am trying shelf pins to drop the 'louvered' door (which is really a teak shelf I have had laying around about 5 years) on to the pins for ease of access and simplicity.

You can see the type of pin I am using. Standard shelf pin you'd use to place a shelf on one of those modular book cases...

If it does not work out or the Admiral says no... not a problem. I'll tackle a new louvered door by making one or buying one... when it gets too cold and wet to play outside

On a boat, simple is good. Very good.
Neat solution!!

I still have to square the hole more and do some finishing work on the door. Just wanted to see if it would work and it seems OK for now.
Next big project is to rip out the floor carpet and replace with flooring.

That looks good Doug, I used a section of that type of shelf in one of the closets on ours.
It will double as a wooden Xylophone :| do they play Xylophones in Hawiian music ( Lea will Love It !).

I want to make a hole like that under our v-berth but on the right side. My concern was whether it would weaken the boat by removing any of the wood up there? On our boat there are 4 cushions for the bed. You lift them up and all storage below. We don't use any of it right now as a pain to get everything put back right.

Looks Good
If you don't like to see what's inside the locker, get a piece of paneling and put it on the back side of the door with the finished side facing the inside of the cabin.

Sean, I cut out a section of one of the verticle support boards that are oriented forward and aft but still left about 3 inches at the top and the same at the bottom so no loss in strength. The verticle hole I cut was 3/4 inch thick and glassed and I don't think it lost any strength.
Roy, The camera flash shows the contents but without the flash, the door covers pretty good. I was also thinking of layering a thin sheet (1/4") of spare foam (black in color) used for air filtering behind the louvers to do more covering and still allow air to circulate.

That hole would look better with some rum bottles back there.

If you want another way to do this, this is what i had done for one of my customers 285 for the same bulkhead. West Marine sells a teak door and frame for about a 100 bones, use the biggest one they sell. It fits great and is a very simple add-on for a hunski. :D

Looks like a great spot for a small-dog doghouse. The threshold may be alittle too high for a weiner dog, especially a boy weiner dog!! :D Put in a floor, soft pillow and stuff a small mutt or two in there. Any way to shrink Cooper?

kal tech ( not sure of spelling) plastics in tacoma has starboard in the scrap bin from time to time.
they also have many other types of plastics if you wanted to do in something other then teak. I think it would look good and maybe save ya some $$

Doug,
This is a great idea , I am going to do the same thing. Everytime I want something from under the bed My wife says I have to remake the bed if I mess it up. So this will take care of the problem . I noticed you cut the divider between the compartments, did you do the same with the next one over ? So that would make it one big compartment, I guest the dividers are not structural. It looks like a good job for a sawzall.
