Wondering if I need to connect my - to the winch to the ground side of my shunt to see the draw?

Not sure how much it should show but it is pulling almost 400# out of the water.

BPA (Bonneville Power Administration) produces hydro power from a system of 31 dams throughout WA, OR, ID and MT. These dams, plus power from the Columbia Nuclear Generating Station have long provided sufficient power for the PNW plus power is sold to all west coast states.

Several years ago the eco-terrorists from the West side of the state of WA were able to get a new law pushed through that required the BPA to buy at least 15% of their power that had come from renewable energy sources. Prior to this new law, 100% of BPA’s power was from renewable energy sources (water and nuclear). That sounded like a wonderful thing, until the fine print was read and it said that hydro power which comes from the dams on the Columbia, Snake, and other dams throughout the PNW could not be counted in the 15% figure.

Now here’s the situation we find ourselves in. The following is from the May/June, 2012 issue of Hotline, the subscriber newsletter published for its customers by Franklin PUD, our local power company.

"Wind farms in the Pacific Northwest which have been built with government subsidies and maintained with tax credits are now getting paid to shut down.

At certain times of the years, there has been an oversupply of renewable power. The problem arises in late spring and early summer when rapid snow melt fills the Columbia River Basin, while at the same time , the wind howls, leading to maximum wind and hydro power production.

Last year when demand could not keep up with supply, BPA (Bonneville Power Administration) shut down geothermal and wind generators for nearly 200 hours over 38 days. The goal was to channel as much water through hydro turbines as possible so that spill levels at the dams could be reduced. In times of high river water volume, “involuntary” spill is often required to pass water downstream.

When shut down, the wind farms do not collect any revenue or renewable energy credits for the lost output. A new BPA policy put in place last spring offered to provide free of charge power to replace the curtailed non-hydro generation, but did not reimburse lost revenues including power revenue and state and federal tax credits.

Due to a new governmental order, BPA is now offering to compensate wind companies for half their lost revenue, at least for this next year. The bill could reach up to $50 million. The extra payout to the wind developers means energy users – our customers at Franklin PUD (Public Utility District) and others in the region – will eventually have to pay more. In essence you are now subsidizing wind developers to build both unneeded plants and also not to operate them in certain circumstances.

BPA can’t shut down the hydroelectric generators because doing so will endanger species of salmon, thanks to overoxygenation of the water that increased water releases can cause.

Traditionally fueled generators, like nuclear fuel, don’t have these problems. They can decrease or increase production as needed. But when they are required to shut down, they also don’t get rewarded for non-production with taxpayer subsidies like their renewable counterparts.

We will continue to stay involved as BPA implements the Oversupply Management Protocol so that any policy adopted is fair to rate payers."

I'm so flipping mad about this. Not only are the danm windmills ugly too look at and being built with taxpaper money and subsidized with tax credits, now we're paying them when they aren't needed and are shut down. And they companies that own them are building more and more all the time.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against energy conservation or geen power, but when it takes all those subsidies to make something like wind power even CLOSE to competing in the marketplace, we've gone too dammmmm far. If I were the king of this country those subsidies would be the first thing to go down the tubes. GRRRRRRRRR.

I have a VacuFlush. It has a vent filter on the top of the tank. The filters are about $100 to replace. I elected to do a DIY recharge and it worked very well. I did this yesterday and tested and 'no odor'.
I saw this on CSR, so I'm stealing some pics, since I didn't take any.

Went to Home Depot and bought 2 fittings male and female for 2" PVC pipe, pipe glue and 3M Scotch Brite pads

Went to Walmart and bought a jar of charcoal.

I took the filter out & Cut the filter in half

Empty the old pellets, and remove the sponge retainer pads by pushing them out from the ends.

Remove the label and clean with acetone.

Glue male and female pipe fittings to the cut ends

Cut 3M Scotch Brite pads to act as screens on the ends.

Fill each half once the glue has dried (10 mins) and keep the threaded female side 2/3 empty so you can start and thread the male end in all the way.

Place rigid cardboard or paper on top of the male side. Hold it so as you invert it the charcoal doesn't fall out.

Remove the cardboard or paper to allow both sides to mate and screw in to tighten.

Reinstall.

One difference in these pictures is that my vent has garden hose type fittings vs. the ones seen here.

Also if I were to do this again, I would cut the tube off center towards one end. There is a small strap on the top of the tank that holds the filter. I don't believe it will go anywhere but it would be nice to have it strap back in.

Hi Folks,

I'm mooring down at Shilshole, and while I'm perfectly content 'boating' while we're sitting at the dock, the admiral likes to toss the lines off and get out. When we moored in Lake Union we'd simply float from one end of the lake to the next. Being out on the Sound with tides and bigger winds I think that will be a bit problematic, especially in such a high traffic area. I'm curious if anyone has ever anchored just off the beach at Golden Gardens. A quick google search netted a picture of a guy doing it......

Yes I know it might be a silly question, but I've yet to use the anchor, and I'm just being cautious.

An older, small runabout burst into flames shortly after refueling at the Richland Yacht Club yesterday. A report on the news said it was the boat owner and his girlfriend who were burned. From what I heard he was not badly burned but the woman had third degree burns over much of her upper body.

The fire department responded but their hoses wouldn't reach the burning boat. It was allowed to burn so there wouldn't be any gasoline spilled on the water.

There were a couple of things that didn't get painted when we had the boat reassembled when it was shipped from MI. I know, I should have already done these, but we've been too busy enjoying the boat, so I'm finally getting around to them.

The first was the swim platform. It was painted when it was installed but we had to relocate the dinghy davits so it needed to be touched up. The yard wanted to do it but I was anxious to hit the trail with the boat so I told them I'd take czre of it.
Here's what it looked like before I painted it....

I spent a lot of time taping it and making sure everything was well masked off...

I used an Awlgrip white paint that I rolled on with a 4" roller and here's what the finished product looks like....

The second project was to paint the couplings that attach the shafts to the transmissions. They had removed the shafts in Portland to make sure they were trued up and I told them I'd take care of painting them.

A long time friend of mine owns an autobody shop. I called him to see who they use to mix paint and he told me they mix their own. I went down to the shop and they fixed me up with the paint, hardener and thinner, and some cleaner to clean the couplings up before painting, plus a paint gun.

Here's what they looked like before I started. This is the port side...
...

and here are the finished couplings. Port side....

So, this Friday we go to the Seattle Premier and private showing of Battleship, the movie. We start off at the Fox Sports Bar and head across the street to the Pacific theater for the private showing. Both the reception and show are free... Adm Thomas Hayward invited us to attend as his guests to this private showing. I have a couple of friends that were credited for input on the movie too. I know its a hooky movie but I think its fine since I like movies for the entertainment value.

Anyone interested in gaining an invite for up to two, PM me ASAP... I can then send the url for the invite...
